Shedding Some Light on Lantern History

June 29th, 2008 by admin

Early lanterns were not decorative at all, but rather utilitarian only. They were primarily square shaped and their designs very plain. The only reason for their existence was to shield the flame of the candle from extinguishing due to wind or breeze. Most early lanterns were rudimentarily designed, and made from sheet iron or tinplate. These were cheap metals and it was rare to find any lanterns made from anything more costly. During the American Revolution, fore example, the more expensive pewter and brass needed to be kept for the forging of guns and molded into ammunition. To use these high-end metals for lanterns was considered a waste.

Early colonists simply retired to bed when the sun went down or lighted a fire for visibility as well as warmth. The first lantern was actually referred to as a lanthorne. Unlike those early years, today’s lanterns are not only used for added visibility but for décor as well.

Lanterns hanging in doorways were the only lighting on city streets in the United States a couple of centuries ago. Few towns had any other sort of lighting on its streets. Boston started public lighting during the first years of the eighteenth century. These weren’t lanterns initially but iron baskets or cressets that would hang from poles. Fuel came from pine knots. These were found only at busy cross roads and night watch men tended these, keeping them lit. Shortly after towns and cities began to pass legislation that required every sixth home to post a lantern or torch outside for street and sidewalk illumination.

Post lanterns became a prominent part of 1770’s Boston. These were generally lit with whale oil. Benjamin Franklin was responsible for the initiation of public lighting in Philadelphia. This took place with the 1751 lantern introduction. The resourceful Franklin realized that two tubes of wick that burned next to each other produced more light than two separate lanterns. He also studied the effect of camphene as a lantern fuel. This turpentine and alcohol combination, though it gave off a considerably brighter light, was very flammable and dangerous.

Gas lanterns came about around 1800, although Europe and most specifically London made the switch to gas lanterns before the United States did so. Paris was lit by gas lanterns as of 1818.

Gas lantern lights were greatly enhanced several times thanks to important discoveries such as the invention of fan shaped gas lantern tubes, a gas an air mixture before lighting the lantern, and a metallic oxide mantle made of cloth to surround the lantern flame.

Buying lanterns, all you need to know from garden lanterns to antique lanterns.

Pixel Disruption To Cause Nausea From User of Computer Screen

June 29th, 2008 by admin

As we study the issues associated with teaching kids in the classroom we find that fluorescent lighting can plague the learning abilities. A slight flicker from such a light can cause disruption in normal brain patterns. Flickering lights at discos and in psychotherapy are used for proper mood enhancement. At a disco it can loosen up a dancer and put the mind in a certain transient state allowing for the movements, mood and mind to flow in the desired pattern. For psychotherapy it can be used to put a subject in a theta state of mind to remember old memories through hypnotic states, relax a patient or even change behavior through the art of suggestion permanently by putting certain commands into the subconscious.

Many people starring at computer screens without proper lighting in the background or computer screens with inadequate pixel adjustment have admitted that they experienced nausea, eye irritation, severe loss of concentration, difficulty comprehending, hesitation and general disruption of the sense. Since the eyesight plays such an integral part in the brains functioning and biorhythms, pixel modification of a display screens is a quick and easy way to disrupt the command and control systems of an enemy in times of political posturing. In times of national crisis or when serving your political will against a foe is paramount it would behoove us to utilize a technique which will give us an edge.

Pixel disruption is not as hard as one might think. For instance a TV which is out of sync is hard to see and can cause dizziness and make someone fall asleep or burn up valuable RAM as the brain uses up 45% of it’s random access memory during processing of visual input. If you watch children with the TV set on late at night when they are tired you can see that if some lights in the house are off they get tired, perhaps you yourself have found it hard to concentrate on a movie when lighting is wrong? Sometimes the TV just needs a little fine-tuning or the screen is not working right due to a little weather disruption, either way it does take it’s toll on a human being. It effects their ability to process the information burning up more RAM and effecting other parts of the body. Disruptions from early radar screens in the US Navy caused these adverse effects requiring the operator to look past the disruptions on the screen. Eventually this was solved, but such problems render the operator less alert and also cause a decrease in concentration and more likelihood for error.

Corporations have done much study with proper lighting in the work place both to save energy and increase productivity or just decrease the loss of productivity. An increase of 20% productivity means you need 20% less people employed at 20% less workstations. This is a huge savings and ultimately a hot topic in University Studies and of course used by many a Light Fixture company to sell products as the brochures of some of the largest supplies of lighting products explain. As a matter of fact each year two very large lighting associations meet in Las Vegas for their annual conventions to pitch not only cost savings, but ergonomic advantages to the bio-system, eyesight and productivity increases. The human species has evolved to work best natural light due to the hundreds of millions of years of adaptation. Yet only in the last 200 years have we adapted to light other than that of the sun or flame, so it obviously stands to reason that our eyes and processing abilities and brain waves are interfered with to some degree with any type of artificial light from man-made devices.

What is the best way to cause lighting to interfere with the human bio-system? Well, from a war stand point several ways. One way is to devise methods of manufacturing, which can be easily altered by software code in the future, yet run perfectly optimum in the present before such conflict or need arising. Another way is to use directional frequency disruption of some type via satellite, LOS UAV apparatus or NLOS ionospheric bounce to an entire region affecting every human for several hundred square miles? Such methods could and will decrease the enemy’s productivity by the 20% or more indicated. Since discussing hacking is not something many like to think about, we should only use this method when other methods are not possible. It should be easy to subsidize computer-monitoring screens and help reduce the price and therefore all people of the planet would be using the same ones running on the same code. When a certain region was a war with other regions, the software could be activated to turn off a random set of number pixels in a symmetrical pattern. Thus you would be fooling the eyes and over taxing the visual processing of the brain during the time at war or directly leading up to war. Such patterns could be tested and be made to agitate the individual’s character, put them to sleep, allow them into a theta state of mind to accept information or question their own belief system and even make them sick. Enough studies exist to prove this point.

If you make the enemy hesitate, become less productive or make bad decisions based on incomplete or bad information from over taxed brains on their team, you can win a war before you start and spare many lives on both sides. This is best for all concerned as it leads to quicker ends to conflicts, less loss of life, quicker mending of parties and less animosity and revenge factor for subsequent future generations. We are condoning war, hacking or conflict amongst the species, we feel it is a given. We must secure our networks from such threats. Protect our team and use every possible options to quickly win and defeat the enemy when the need arises. Disrupting the enemy through computer pixel disruption is an easy way to help us achieve such goals. It is cheap, effective and easy to induce if and when it must be done.

I Do Not Have HSP

June 26th, 2008 by admin

I always thought of myself as a klutz. Always falling, skinned knees were common. Isn’t there a time in the aging process when you grow out of that…like the teens? People referred to me as the most uncoordinated person they knew. It was a joke, to which I got a little sensitive. It was also common for people to ask me if I was from the South. I had a Southern drawl although I was from Iowa. It hurt me when I heard someone comment on my garbled speech. It never occurred to me that an actual medical problem existed. This was ridiculous of me, especially since my Grandmother and many other family members had a genetic disease that affected walking and speech. The others in my family were affected at an older age. I guess I just never believed that myself, being only 32 could have Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia.

I decided that I was getting so stiff and clumsy that something must be wrong. I walked like Frankenstien. I was totally shot by the end of the day unless I had lain around all day, which is basically impossible, being a mother. It was time to find out what the problem was, I knew it was not Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia. The first two doctors had heard of HSP, but that was the extent of their knowedge. I searched and found a neurologist who had seen one other patient with HSP. She was the one. I was to have an MRI of the brain to rule out MS, which has symptoms similar to HSP. She reviewed the lovely pictures of my brain and gave me a neurological test. I know I could have done better, if given the chance to study. Dr. Rankin also asked me questions about my family history. With no MS, a failed neurological test and a positive family history, the diagnosis was in…I had HSP. I was secretly hoping that I was to be given a mimeographed sheet of exercises and I would return to normal. That was not the case.

HSP is a group of neuromuscular disorders that prevent messages from the brain from getting to their destination in a timely manner. When your brain tells your foot to move and it doesn’t, but your momentum is going forward, you fall. The ends of the longest nerves degenerate. Imagine a slow progressing spinal cord injury. Toe-drop (not lifting the front of the feet), coordination problems, fatigue, muscle weakness, muscle cramping, stiffness, circulation problems, balance and incontinence are symptoms. Unfortunately there are forms that affect speech, swallowing, vision, and hearing, among others.

It was extreme denial at it’s finest, that I never had the slightest inclination toward thinking I was a victim of a genetic neurologic problem. A nurse from Dr. Fink’s office at the University of Michigan enlightened me as to what the symptoms were and that they could strike at any age. Even babies in some families can have this disease, I never knew this. Since this disease is so rare there simply is not much information available. The reason for talking to Dr. Fink’s office was that they are trying to find a cure for HSP and being a relative of one of the affected, I was asked to participate, which I gladly obliged. Dr. Fink is one of the leading HSP researchers.

Right now there is no cure for HSP. Hopefully there will be soon, before my son shows any symptoms. That is definitely the worst part, knowing that I could pass this on. He has a 50% chance of inheriting the disorder.

The prognosis is different for everyone, in my family people end up in wheelchairs. I am at the point that I am beginning to use a cane or walker, depending on how much walking I have to do.

The moral of this story is to take off the denial glasses. If you think something may be wrong…check it out. Most things can be cured if treated promptly.

Dot Foods is a private carrier transporting grocery goods. While there are only a few areas hiring truck drivers, those who meet requirements can expect an average of $900 a week and $.37 - $.41 cpm for the first year as well as bonuses and pay for actual miles, layovers, pick-up and detention.

Tyson Foods offers truck drivers $.39 - $.42 cpm to start in addition to an annual safety bonus. Also, if you have a single trip under 500 miles, Tyson pays an extra $.03 cpm and for single trips under 250 miles, they pay $.06 cpm. In addition, Tyson offers paid vacation, jury pay, drop and pick-up pay, layover pay, unloading pay, bereavement pay and short term disability.

Boise is a private carrier looking for truck drivers to transport their paper products. Boise is a good carrier to drive for because they have plenty of freight. They offer $.86 - $.93 per loaded mile (plus a fuel surcharge) and $.74 per empty mile. Boise offers $50 for each extra stop as well as referral bonuses.

Posture is Not Improved by Trying Harder

June 19th, 2008 by admin

Do you think your posture is poor? Have you tried a course of posture exercises to correct it? Most people would say they feel their posture could be better but why does it become poor and what is the best way to improve it?

Modern living means we probably are not as active as previous generations. We spend long hours sitting at desks, in cars or when relaxing, slumping in front of the TV. In these situations you are not using your muscles as nature originally intended. Parts of your body get overworked such as your neck and shoulders whilst others will get weaker, invariably the lower back. Poor posture has been recognized as a factor in health for many years resulting in the development of posture exercises to correct it.

However, this approach may be misguided as the focus on specific muscles for improving posture could affect your body’s natural support reflexes.

Your body has built-in postural reflexes to coordinate muscular activity for support and movement. If your posture has deteriorated it is likely these reflexes are not being allowed to work properly. Stress may be causing you to stiffen your neck and tighten your shoulders. These actions will override your natural mechanisms for balance and movement. Constant inappropriate use of these muscles will eventually corrupt how you move. It becomes a catch-22 problem. The more you move in a poor way, the better you get at moving this way until it feels right.

Whilst I appreciate the popularity of exercises to improve posture, including core stability routines, I believe they result in unnecessary tension in the body. Should we have to work core muscles individually to get our body to stand tall? Did nature intend this as the best way to stand?

In my role as a teacher of The Alexander Technique I see many people who suffer as a result of poor posture. I also see just as many who are suffering as a result of their attempts to correct it! Adding a little extra tension in order to stand properly will not improve your posture - it just adds to the strain on your muscles and joints. Rather than trying to stand and sit in a way you feel is correct, you can learn how to remove the unnecessary stress in your body and allow your postural reflexes to work as nature intended.

So forget about posture and learn about Poise.

Poise is a lost skill from our youth. When you have poise you use far less effort and your body will support itself with ease allowing you to move, breathe and function more freely. Poise is evident in top athletes and performers. Think of Muhammad Ali or Fred Astaire in their prime and that gives you a great example of freedom in movement. I doubt if they used exercises to improve their posture!

Poise can only be regained by first taking out the tension in your body and appreciating the push you get from the ground. When you are on top of the world and walk with a spring in your step, you are poised. When you can sit at your desk and feel no tension in your neck, shoulders and back - you are poised. Trying to improve your posture by trying harder will take you further away from your natural poised state. So don’t try - let whatever is beneath you push up and think of letting go to sit, stand and walk taller and you will be on your way to a return to poise.

Avoid Divorce - Use The Four R’s

June 19th, 2008 by admin

Divorce is a messy business. If both parties are truly interested in reconciling their differences, most times a divorce can be avoided. If people are willing to compromise, they can often find solutions to problems they never thought were possible.

If your marriage is going through one of those phases that all marriages eventually go through, you will find yourself in a position where a simply apology will go a very long way in helping to resolve the issue. If enough of these smaller issues are left unrecognized, a divorce will most likely be in your future.

If you have done something you need to apologize for, use the four R’s to help develop an apology that will go a very long way. Hopefully, this strategy can help avoid a divorce or in the worst-case scenario, make a divorce a little more amicable. The four R’s for a successful apology are: recognition, regret, responsibility and remedy.

RECOGNITION

You must first recognize where you have gone wrong and what you need to apologize for. If you don’t recognize the fact it may not be OK to play golf with the boys every Saturday and Sunday morning, then you maybe a single golfer before you know it. If however, you recognize playing golf every weekend with the boys may not be in the best interest of your marriage, you may want to recognize this fact and admit it to your spouse.

REGRET

After you recognize the error of your ways and admit you were wrong to play golf all weekend long, you would be well served to express regret to your spouse because of your actions. If your spouse sees sincere regret on your part, they are more likely to accept your apology as being genuine and heart felt.

RESPONSIBILITY

If you don’t want to become a single golfer, when you apologize to your spouse, you should accept full responsibility for your actions. It is useless to blame the guys for dragging you out to the course every weekend morning. It serves no purpose to blame a stressful job and the fact you require some down time with the guys in order to help you cope. You must fess up and admit the problem was caused by you and only you can help change the outcomes.

REMEDY

Once you recognize that playing golf every weekend is not acceptable and you have demonstrated sincere regret and responsible for your actions, it is time to develop a remedy to help solve the problem.

You must communicate to your spouse how you intend to remedy or change the problem so that the behavior is not repeated in the future. You must compromise with your spouse so that both of you can agree upon an acceptable time to play golf with the boys.

Be Inspired By the Amazing Windsor Castle

June 18th, 2008 by admin

Windsor Castle is alleged to be the largest lived in castles around today & the eldest in nonstop occupation (more than 900 years). It’s one of the Queen’s three actual residences, & is frequently said to be her outright most liked home. The Royal colours flutters above the Round Tower of Windsor Castle when Queen Elizabeth the 2nd is at the palace - however, at other occasions, the Union Jack flag flies as normal.

Samuel Pepys mentioned Windsor Castle to be “the solitary most loving castle on the planet.” That was said in 1666, and the same is true even today.

Windsor Castle Moving History:

The opening of Windsor can be found lying in the early seventh century Saxon parish of Windlesora, where the existing day village of Old Windsor is. The town of Windsor is more correctly known as the “New Windsor” - the word “new” being taken in a relative sense!

Windsor Castle was initially put together by the famed William the Conqueror, as a result of his raid of England in ten-sixty-six. The original building was constructed from wood with gravel barricades. Windsor Castle held an obvious tactical position on a big mound overlooking the River Thames, and was a fraction of a number of of strongholds in the region London, with the Tower of London, one whole days trek away, at its middle. For details for Windsor Castle, visit the Enjoy England website.

The Palace was then later reconstructed in stone, & grew in significance during the years. In recent times Henry 2nd redesigned the Round Tower and the original stone outer wall. After the English Civil War, the Castle’s key role became that of a royal house. The Castle has stayed principally untouched since the start of the 19th century, apart from the restoration effort right after the horribly fire.
