Shadow of an Indian Star - Book Review

March 30th, 2009 by admin

Shadow of an Indian Star is a 500-page historical fiction set in the early 1800’s. It accurately brings life to a fascinating era of gun slinging, saloon drinking, hard work, rough living and bittersweet romance. The exploits of heroes, villains and those just trying to survive during this tumultuous era are certain to keep readers aching to turn the next page.

A rich family lore, with momentary appearances of well-known historical characters such as Billy the Kid and General Custer, was remembered and passed on to each new generation until Bill Paul and his wife Cindy became curious enough to determine the accuracy of the tales. As it turned out, the stories were true!

Map-lovers will enjoy the insert within the first few pages, which depicts the area that this story takes place in. Three generations of the Paul family history and their bitter feuds are divided into segments, one for each generation. A simple family tree is provided on the last page.

Little known facts of the Native Indian tribe known as the Chickasaw Nation along with the life of early settlers in Oklahoma could be excellent reading for history classes. Readers will witness the Trail of Tears and learn about callous and greedy settlers and a corrupt government. Readers will also see the grace and pride between both peoples in their uninhibited generosity, genuine grief for each other and intense inter-racial romances.

Authors Bill and Cindy Paul are both well educated individuals. Bill holds a degree in animal science, while Cindy has degrees in biology and environmental science. The couple resides in the very same valley and maintains the family graveyard that is written about in their first novel, Shadow of an Indian Star.

I am completely in awe of the authors’ talent and superb story-telling capabilities.
This tale was amazing and I enjoyed the ride immensely. There is no doubt in my mind that this book needs to be seen by movie or TV series producers.

ISBN#: 097559222X

All the People Who Ate Meat on Friday Went to Hell

March 28th, 2009 by admin

For Centuries the Catholic Church forbid people from eating meat on Fridays and so no one ate meat, instead they ate something else. Now that the Pope changed the rules a few decades ago one has to wonder if indeed it is fair to all the people who previously went to hell for eating meat on that day.

I mean there they are stuck in hell for something that is no longer against the rules, says the little hunched over guy in the funny “B-Movie” type Wardrobe and cruises around in a silly little Pope Mobile. Nevertheless, now that the rules have changed, I propose we organize a multi-lateral Coalition of the greatest nations on Earth with the greatest military and form a rescue mission. We must bring these poor soles back from Hell.

Why? Well because it is not fair you know. We know we cannot get the United Nations to pass a resolution, after all who knows how many of the Third World Leaders are Satan followers or how many modern nations are involved in some sort of “Food-for-the-Souls Programs” under the table so to speak?

We must save these souls as their civil rights are being severely violated down there and we as caring nation must do something about this. We cannot negotiate with the Devil or the nation states, which sponsor him. So we may have to go down there ourselves and save these souls. It is a just and noble cause after all these folks only wanted to put a little protein in their diets and did not have anything against animals with hooves or eating them on Fridays?

Diplomas from Colleges and Universities

March 27th, 2009 by admin

Diplomas for Graduation

Graduation diplomas are usually conferred to students who have accomplished their studies in the respective levels of education. The handing over of graduation diplomas is marked by celebrations as family and friends celebrate the academic achievements of their loved ones. At university and college levels, these ceremonies are marked by unique dresses worn by both the trustees’ and the degree candidates. In these two levels of education, graduation occurs when degrees are conferred upon the candidates by a presiding officer either en masse or individually, even in cases where the
graduation diplomas is physically received at a smaller departmental ceremony.
Graduation diplomas are attractive and are a representation of significant amounts scholastic achievements. They should be safely kept after graduating from a specific program or school and should ensure that there are certified transcripts of the original. A graduation diploma is ideal for framing because it is suitably decorative and may also play the role of proving competency to clients when framed and displayed in an office. Students who are incapable of meeting the graduation requirements usually receive documents that have similarities to graduation diplomas known as a completion certificate. Completion certificates are sometimes only offered by certain programs, but the actual degree or graduation is not offered.

Security Systems Software and Basics

March 26th, 2009 by admin

Copyright 2006 Francesca Black

Anti-Virus Software:

Install virus protection software. That means three things: having it on your computer in the first place, checking daily for new virus signature updates, and then actually scanning all the files on your computer periodically. Update your anti-virus software daily or weekly and schedule a regular scan. Make sure all family members know what to do if the home computer becomes infected.

Locate Anti-Virus Software - http://www.monitoring-software.net/

Install Firewall Software:

Firewalls act as a gatekeepers between your computer or network and the Internet. They are essential for those who keep their computers online through the popular DSL and cable modem connections, but they are also valuable for those who still dial in. Protect your computer from Internet intruders. Use firewalls. Firewalls are usually software product but can also be hardware solutions.

Passwords:

Choose passwords or Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) that are difficult for others to guess. Use both letters and numbers and a combination of lower- and upper-case letters if the passwords are case-sensitive. Use a different password for each of your Internet accounts.

Passwords should not be names, or words (from any language). Hackers who try to obtain passwords for accounts that don’t belong to them (called crackers) use large dictionaries filled with these kinds of passwords. In order to protect yourself against these people, simply don’t use common words!

Change these passwords frequently. Don’t keep your password where someone can see it. If it can possibly be avoided, don’t write it down at all. There are ways to create passwords that are both secure and easy to remember. Remember that your password unlocks your online identity. Don’t leave yourself logged in when your machine is unattended. Everything that is done with your account can and will be attributed to you. It’s best that you keep your password somewhat esoteric. Do not use the same password for different systems.

More on Passwords - http://www.password-software

Backups:

Back up your computer data on disks or CDs regularly. Retain the only copies of those files on removable media and store the media in a safe place. Use accessories such as rewriteable CD drives and zip disks for copies of your important files - they’re easy to use and relatively cheap.

Alert:

Be alert for fraudulent (sometimes called “phishing”) emails. They may appear to come from a reputable business or a trusted friend but are actually designed to trick you into downloading a virus to your computer or directing you to a Web site to disclose sensitive or personal information. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, educate all system users to be alert for phishing scams.

Practice Safe Computing:

Protect shared files and folders. Set the permissions on the share to “read-only.” This means that no one will be able to copy, delete, modify, or rename your files. Set-up login accounts and file permissions, so only authorised users can access the system. Unix and Windows NT/2000 have these security functions built in. If you run Windows 95/98/Me, you can buy products to provide this protection.

Configure the access restrictions to individual files or folders, so other users can only access the files you want them to. Understand and use the security features provided by your PC software, such as those included in many operating systems, browsers and word processing systems. The safest option is to set your computer to ignore Java and ActiveX programming languages. Otherwise set your browser to ask you each time it is about to run Java and ActiveX code.

Depending on what you know about the site, you will at least have the choice to run it, or not. If information privacy is imperative you should also consider using a file- or disk-encryption system on the sensitive files.

European Lotto plus Something You Might Not Recognise. How it Works, Who it Applies to plus How You May You Play that Massive European Lotto

March 23rd, 2009 by admin

The European lottery was to begin with set-up by the national lotteries of the United Kingdom, Spain and France and was revealed in February 2004. The original lotto draw was on Feb 13th-04 in Paris. The France, Spain and the United Kingdom were the only nations partaking in the beginning but lotteries from Austria, Belgium, the Republic of Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal and Switzerland also became engaged in Oct 2004.

The Euromillions lotto or the Euro lotto, as it’s commonly recognized, gathers the lottery ticket revenues of the 9 partaking Euro countries giving a sizeable Euro Millions jackpot. With the number of countries joining the Euro on the increase, that will without a doubt lead to even more countries partaking in the EuroMillions lottery. An increase in the amount of individuals partaking in the Euro Lottery will result in a lasting increase of the already gigantic Euro Millions “jackpots”.

Q. How Would You Play The European Lotto?

Each player must select five primary numbers from one to fifty plus 2 Lucky-star numbers from 1 to 9. During the draw, five primary and 2 lucky-star numbers are then selected at random from 2 draw machines containing numbered balls.

Euro Lotto Prizes

The probability of scooping the Euro Lotto “jackpot” is a distant 1 in seventy-six million but the possibility of winning a cash prize is a fairly decent one in 24. If the jackpot is not won on a given lotto draw, it is brought forward to the following lotto draw which results in an ever increasing jack-pot prize. New rules brought in on the 9 February 2007 limit the number of consecutive “roll-overs” to eleven, with the “jackpot” rolling out to smaller value levels in the 11th lottery draw if the prize is not won.

The recent rules likewise initiated European Super Draw which happen twice yearly plus they offer “jackpots” in the region of 100 million pounds. The difference with Super Draws is that the jack-pot has to be won during the week of the lottery draw; as a result, when there is no lotto ticket matching, all the drawn numbers then the top prize will then be allotted to the ticket bearer(s) on the next winning prize level.

Free Internet Software

March 18th, 2009 by admin

The Best Internet Software

I’ve scoured the online world to find the best Internet software in several categories, and I tried hard to find Macintosh equivalents for Windows programs when available. Most of the Windows programs are FREE, as are most of the Mac versions, but there were a few cases where I couldn’t find a freebie or equivalent for the Mac. Let’s have a look…

WEB BROWSERS

FireFox (WIN/MAC/LINUX) FREE
Firefox is a full-featured alternative to Internet Explorer that offers more secure browsing, popup blocking, tabbed browsing (view more than one web page in a single window), built-in search and a download manager.
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Opera (WIN/MAC/LINUX) FREE
Opera’s hallmark is compliance with Internet standards, and features a pop-up blocker, multiple-window navigation, mouse gestures, keyboard shortcuts, an e-mail client with a spam filter, and integrated search for user security and speed. The cross-platform browser includes chat, support for RSS newsfeeds, a password manager and cookie manager.
http://www.opera.com

FORM FILLERS

Roboform (WIN) FREE
RoboForm memorizes and stores your passwords, so you don’t have to. It automatically logs you into websites and completes online forms with one click. Passwords can be printed, copied to another computer, backed up, and restored.
http://www.roboform.com

My research shows no equivalent to Roboform for Macs. The Safari browser has some built-in form filling, but it will not work with IE, Firefox or other browsers.

RSS READERS

Feed Demon (WIN) FREE TRIAL
Stop wasting time checking your favorite web sites for updates. Take advantage of RSS feeds and use FeedDemon instead, and make them come to you. Easy-to-read newspaper format displays the latest news from dozens of sites, and Watches alert you to items of interest so you don’t have to look for them.
http://www.bradsoft.com/feeddemon/

NetNewsWire (MAC) FREE TRIAL
NetNewsWire is an easy-to-use RSS and Atom newsreader for Mac OS X. Its familiar three-paned interfacesimilar to Apple Mailcan fetch and display news from thousands of different websites and weblogs, making it quick and easy to keep up with the latest news.
http://ranchero.com/netnewswire/

REMOTE CONTROL

LogMeIn (WIN) FREE
Access your home or work computer via the Internet. LogMeIn offers full access and remote control of your computer via a web browser. You can view the desktop and use the mouse or keyboard to launch programs, open files or play a game. It’s just as if you were sitting in front of the remote computer.

Remote Desktop (MAC)
Mac users, try Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac.

SEARCH UTILITIES

Google Desktop Search (WIN)
Google Desktop Search lets you search the web or your own computer. Very handy when you want to find that file or email containing a certain word or phrase. By continuously cataloging your hard drive, Desktop Search can find text inside files created by Outlook, Thunderbird, Firefox, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Instant Messenger, PDFs and more.
http://desktop.google.com/

Finder (MAC) FREE
If you have a Mac, then you’ve got search and more built in. Finder gives you lots of options for locating, displaying and organizing all your files and folders. And Dashboard helps you search the Internet for weather info, stocks, airline flights, phone numbers, language translations and more.

FILE TRANSFER (FTP)

WINSCP (WIN) FREE
A highly rated file transfer program useful for updating your web sites. Supports SFTP for secure file transfer and can set permissions on remote files too.

Fetch (MAC) $25 - FREE TRIAL
This is the one everybody recommends for Mac file transfer. Full featured, but alas, not a freebie.
http://www.fetchsoftworks.com

NETWORK UTILITIES

Sam Spade (WIN) FREE

Telnet allows your PC to emulate another type of computer, and is especially useful for connecting to a Unix shell account. I use NetTerm to remotely login to my web host’s Unix-based server and manage my websites. Make sure you ALWAYS use a telnet client that supports SSH encryption, or you will be sending your password and session data over the Internet in clear text, which could be intercepted.
http://securenetterm.com

Nifty Telnet (MAC) FREE
Nifty Telnet-SSH is said to be the best free SSH (secure shell) client for MacOS 9.
http://www.msi.umn.edu/user_support/ssh/nifty_os9.html

For MacOS X users, you can use the built-in Terminal tool. This page tells how to enable Kerberos to make secure (encrypted) connections with Terminal.

Microsoft Small Business Manager eCommerce - Overview

March 16th, 2009 by admin

Microsoft Business Solutions Small Business Manager is scaled down Great Plains Dexterity based version of Microsoft Great Plains or former Great Plains Dynamics/eEnterprise. Small Business Manager first release 7.0 and all the following version was available on MSDE (MS SQL Server 2000 with limited usage and database size - 2GB maximum). It is nice situation on the market in eCommerce niche - we see huge number of customers, who have purchased and implemented SBM for their small and mid-size businesses and then realized that customization options for Small Business Manager are very limited: in comparison to Great Plains SBM doesn’t have VBA/Modifier, it has very restricted version of Integration Manager. These restrictions lead you, eCommerce developer to direct SQL programming. Again - being scaled down version of Microsoft Great Plains - Small Business Manager has a legacy of relatively complex tables structure.
tom stored procedures way here:

1. Tables Structure. Small Business Manager has similar to Great Plains structure and similar System DYNAMICS database and the company. As you could see tables structure in Resource description in Great Plains - so you do in SBM

2. Stored Procs. Yes - we can go ahead and create stored proc in DYNAMICS and companies databases or Small Business Manager. Now - there is one issue. Technically Small Business Manager comes with MSDE and MSDE doesn’t have lovely tool SQL Server Enterprise Manager with Query Analyzer, etc. So somehow you should deal with this. If you have consulting programmer - she or he can connect to your MSDE installation, using MS SQL Server Enterprise Manager, installed on consultant’s laptop

3. Visual Studio.Net. This is the development tools to use - because you will need a lot of web-debugging, considering complicated tables structure and records workflow. Some developers might suggest to use VS.Net data designer to link to Great Plains tables - this idea is rather very difficult to realize, because of the simultaneous population of multiple tables, while creating internet orders: Order Header, Order Lines, Order Comments, Customer Master, Customer Address Master to name a few. So we would recommend sticking to stored proc.

4. SOP. Sales Order Processing. Usually eCommerce solution works around Sales Order Processing tables. The reason is - it works with Inventoried items and typical eCommerce is ordering specific items off the internet. Look at SOP10100, SOP10200 and other tables with SOP prefix. Also you should know that SOP1XXX - are so called working tables and you populate mostly these, when orders are transformed to invoices, order record goes to SOP3XXX tables - these are called historical

5. RM. Receivables Management Module - When Sales Order Processing Invoices are posted - they create record in Accounts Receivables or Receivables Management Module. RM has RMXXXX tables and the ones you are interested to know are RM00101 - customer master and RM00102 - customer address master

6. Batch Processing. We recommend you consider just order creation via web interface. Then these orders should be processed by operator in Small Business Manager

Good luck with implementation, customization and integration and if you have issues or concerns - we are here to help! If you want us to do the job - give us a call 1-630-961-5918 or 1-866-528-0577! help@albaspectrum.com
