What’s in a Word

May 29th, 2009 by admin

online poker is full of colorful terminology and odd phrases, which newcomers to the game may find strange or simply incomprehensible. Some of these sayings also sound downright painful, even though the opposite is true.

Getting “hit in the face with the deck” is a good thing. This is the happy circumstance when a poker player has a lasting rush of luck, and wins hand after hand. Any poker player who has spent any time at the tables gets hit in the face once in a while, and certainly has witnessed it happening to another player.

Another way to describe good luck at the poker table is to say a player has a “horsehoe up the ass.” Again, this doesn’t sound too appealing, yet in poker it connotes a happy circumstance. Players will say things like, “hey, send that horsehoe you’re sitting on over here.”

In any event, when you’re at a table where someone is getting hit in the face with the deck, or has a horseshoe lodged where the sun doesn’t shine, then recognize that circumstance and play tight. Sometimes players just get lucky and the cards come their way, in which case, it’s best to just get out of their way when they are on a lucky rush. And when the unthinkable happens to you, exploit and enjoy it.

AT&T TV — Great Service

May 27th, 2009 by admin

My wife and I have had ATT TV service set up for one week so far. An equivalent bundle through another company would cost almost double what I am paying ATT’s TV service. I greatly respect U-Verse providing a realistic all-in-one bundle that stops from nailing customers with a bunch of bs charges. 3 receivers (1 with DVR capabilities) are included in the price.

HD accepted for free for one year - only $10 per year after the promotional period terminates… not bad since U-Verse provides at least twice the number of HD channels which Comcast provides nearby.

Channel changing is surprisingly fast. Almost as rapid as our old cable. On Demand (Pay-per-view) content is fine but not as close as the selection provided by other providers. I had company the evening after installment - they wanted to watch UFC, but U-Verse didn’t have it. When I called, the I spoke with had received many similar calls.

Equipment overall functions as promoted. Right now, there are only 4 TV flows ready in the closest marketplace. I have only run out of streams once - even after grabbing all 42 of my episode tapings from my Comcast box! (You can access some of your DVR’s settings from your private U-Verse AT&T home page - solid plus). I do not have HDTV, thus no need for the addition. Watching an HD station takes up 2 streams - the leftover flows can only be used for standard definition stations. It seems, a increase in the number of TV streams is in the works at the end of the summer. In addition, AT&T will be bringing the ability to see DVR tapings from any box.

A Tale of the Early Luxury Chalet Vacations to Chamonix France

May 26th, 2009 by admin

Back in 1770 the very first tourist hotel was completed in Chamonix. Before this Chamonix ski resort embodied a wild and tough agrarian place where folks caught their animals and farmed their own cereals.

Barns at this time were used to farm dairy herds during the spring and summer. The cows milk was preserved by turning it into cheese and preserved in the farm for eating during the hard wintertimes. Throughout the snow season the chalets were locked up, and any valuables were put safely in a tiny shack.

Quite who devised chalet holidays is obscured by time, it was in all likelihood numerous spirited people who recognized a pattern that was new and exciting. For entrepreneur Erna Low it all began whilst she was a unhappy graduate who could not see her family back home as much as she liked. Thus in 1933 she gambled and put a small ad in the broadsheets to invite punters on a winter vacation. For only £15 they traveled to and from the skiing resort, were provided with meals and board in the only hotel, and paid for ski equipment and lessons. Holidays were arduous work, there weren’t any ski lifts, no quick release fixings, merely leather shoes, however it was so successful that she kept on taking friends on vacation, guaranteeing she used supreme lodges and ski instructors.

catered chalets trips during the formative years were very different from the luxuries we can experience now. Back then hot water was in short supply, washrooms were shared by all of the guests, and there was no a cook; all the punters were expected to muck in. It was a complete lottery as to who might share the lodge for a holiday, you may be pleased to encounter new allies, or not gel with the group.

Chalet holidays were later marketed on their other pluses. Your own chef, who served you breakfast and an evening meal and provided you a cake.

2006 Hurricane Season; Can We Kill Them Before They Form?

May 26th, 2009 by admin

There is no doubt that the 2005 Hurricane Season was one we will not soon forget. Meteorologists believe that 2006 will not be a walk in the park either. Indeed the 2006 Hurricane Season will be above normal. Is there any hope for finding a way, which will allow us to kill these Hurricanes before they form? Can’t we do something?

Indeed scientists have been studying this possibility and some of them theorize that it maybe nearly impossible to kill a Category Five Hurricane like Hurricane Katrina, Rita or Wilma, but it maybe able to prevent them from forming. How so you ask?

Evaporation Reduction indeed is one of the best ways to prevent Hurricanes from forming, as it allows the localized wind shear and relative wind to keep the circular flows from growing. It is very wise of the scientists to point this out and there are some other interesting web links and research on this very important point to preventing killer Hurricanes from forming. It is amazing the mixture of pop culture conspiracy theory and real science here in this subject.

But is it truly possible to modify the water droplets so they evaporate at slower rates or not at all, thus depriving the ever-increasing circular airflows of a wall to block the relative winds, which would normally prevent it from forming into a Tropical Storm or Hurricane. Some believe it is, I am one of them what do you think? Think on it.

How Did Barrister Bookcases Come into Existence? - it Is Captivating

May 23rd, 2009 by admin

Bookcases are an necessary piece of any library. books are safe and free from dirt and debris in a bookcase. Bookcases generally have flat compartments for keeping publications. These bookshelves sometimes come with glass doors for ready to hand admittance to the contents.

Tell me about a barrister bookcase.

A barristers job involves referring several wide worthy books each twenty-four hour period. the legal daybooks are costly and attorneys demand to consult them often. A barrister bookcase is a kind of bookcase particularly created for stashing away such tremendous volumes utilised by barristers. These attorneys bookcases are usually created using oak wood, cherry wood in different finishes and tinges.

How did people store volumes when barrister bookcases did not exist?

Volumes were not found commonly, so nobody thought of how to store them. books in old years were hand-penned only. wealthy individuals who owned them stored them in getatable containers. It was the wealthy mans privilege to own and carry books as they were not affordable. These containers served as a bookcase for them.

As time passed, these manuscript volumes were owned by lots of such clergymen and affluent people in a large number. Due to this, the volumes were located in closets or on shelves. The bookshelves that we see Now are an offspring of these closets in the past, without the doors.

What technique was employed for stacking away books?

These books were not located with a modern approach. The volumes would be placed on their sides or with the edge on the forefront. these books had a band built from leather or parchment as a cover that mentioned the title too. This band was located on the front edge and hence the volumes were placed with their edges facing out.

After publishing engineering was invented, books were easily available to the general man due to the diminished costs.Another contributed gain of publishing was that the newspaper publishers published the title on the back of the volume so that the edges were placed inwards.

Which materials were mainly used?

In the olden years, barrister bookcases were created of oak primarily. there were other choices of maple, cherry and pine wood if you liked.Custom-produced barrister bookcases can be made in steel too for reducing wood price and strength. The Bodleian Library at Oxford University houses the oldest bookcases. these bookcases are present here from sixteenth century onward.

Chippendale and Sheraton were the leading bookcase designers who created the most beautiful bookcases. These bookcases indeed contributed to the elegance of the room.

How are the latest bookcases different?

Isnt it great to walk into the past times of a barrister bookcase, which was once just a bookshelf?

Book Review - Net Entrepreneurs Only

May 22nd, 2009 by admin

Everyone loves to read other peoples success stories. It provides us with evidence that amazing things do happen to normal people. By learning what they did to succeed we come one step closer to success ourselves. Such is the case with the ten stories told in Net Entrepreneurs Only - 10 Entrepreneurs Tell the Stories of their Success by Gregory K. Ericksen and Ernst & Young.

Ericksen interviewed ten of the most successful entrepreneurs at the turn of the century and presents their stories with a unique but effective use of lengthy quotes from the entrepreneurs. The quotes leave you with a feeling of having actually interviewed the entrepreneur yourself rather than reading a story about them. Each story is about 20 pages long but reads more like 10 pages because of the big print and free flowing pace.

The 10 entrepreneurs chronicled in the book are Jay S. Walker (priceline.com), Mike McNulty and Mike Hagan (VerticalNet), Christina Jones (pcOrder), William Porter and Christos Cotsakos (E*Trade), Gregory K. Jones (uBid), Russell Horowitz (Go2Net), Ken Pasterna (Knight/Trimark), William Schrader (PSINet), Pierre Omidyar (eBay), and Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner (broadcast.com).

Each entrepreneur has a unique story of how and why they saw the internet as a viable place to start a business, and each had a different way of getting there, but after reading all ten stories you can see some common threads between these extremely successful net entrepreneurs. Although this book was written at a time when internet business success was substantially easier (the book was published in 2000), many of the core competencies that these entrepreneurs possess can be applied in any era to any industry.

Each is extremely passionate about what they do to the point that they inspire others around them to have the same passion. Each is not afraid to take a risk, regardless of whether or not other people disagree with it. Along with that, each knows that failure is inevitable when taking risks and understands that future success depends on the ability to learn from failure and move on.

Another interesting thing that was mentioned in three of the ten stories is the fear of being blindsided by an opponent that they can’t see coming. They all talk about the proverbial kid in his basement or garage that comes up with the technology that puts them out of business. When talking about Mark Cuban, Todd Wagner said:

“I know Mark worries, among other things, about the proverbial 12-year-old in the garage [coming up with technological breakthroughs] and us being blindsided.”

This commonality is particularly interesting, and I suspect it comes from the fact that many of these entrepreneurs WERE THAT KID and they fear the second coming of themselves more than anything else. They probably fear that this “kid” will have the same passion and determination that they once had, and that, more than anything else scares them.

If I had read this book when it was written I would certainly have recommended it to any young entrepreneur. However, years later I recommend it EVEN MORE. I think that it’s a must read for anyone looking to go into business or currently in business.

The thing that you can do now that you couldn’t do when the book was written is find out what’s happened to these entrepreneurs and their companies in the time that has passed since the book’s publication. One of the biggest joys of reading this book was trying to guess whether or not these companies still existed and whether or not the same entrepreneur was still running them.

Knowing that there was the dot-com boom and subsequent crash around that time, I figured there was less than a 50/50 chance that these businesses were still around. I’m not going to ruin the individual surprises, but there was a fairly vast array of directions that these companies and entrepreneurs went after the dot-com crash.

Some of the entrepreneurs we’ve all heard of (Mark Cuban), and some of the companies we know still exist and are very successful (eBay), but many the average reader won’t be familiar with. Doing the research to find out where they are today adds an extra dimension to the book that a reader wouldn’t have experienced if they read it when it came out.

Net Entrepreneurs Only - 10 Entrepreneurs Tell the Stories of their Success by Gregory K. Ericksen and Ernst & Young is an extremely interesting for anyone who enjoys a good success story. However, it’s truly inspiring if you are that entrepreneur who strives come up with the next innovating breakthrough that puts one of these ten entrepreneurs out of business.

Spring Horse Racing Carnival

May 21st, 2009 by admin

For Australia, we love our horse racing & we thought we’d showcase Australia’s biggest and largest renowned event, The Melbourne Spring Festival. Rest back and enjoy as we guide people through Melbourne’s largest race in Australia, revealing Aussie stars of Aussie Turf & of course the breeders & jockeys at the forefront of this astonishing industry. This is Victoria’s finest thing for punters to grab their money’s worth.

Once we eventually get beyond Derby Day & by god it is an enormous day, we prepare ourselves for the day that stops the nation, The Melbourne Cup. Ever since the origin of the race, the stories of Archer being walked down from Sydney to compete the Trophy and who won the 1st two runnings of it to boot, Aussies have been engaged. Melbournians even have a bank holiday to party!

The love affair which was Makybe Diva and the Australian residents was something to be admired. She was why individuals went to the track. To win three Melbourne Cups in progression is something else that we seemingly will not ever happen again. What about the daze Aussies got when Dermot Weld came away and took the Trophy home to Ireland in ‘93 with Vintage Crop. Or feasibly when he did it again back in ‘02 with Media Puzzle. What about Sheila Laxon conquering with Ethereal, or perhaps the well known Might & Power & Doriemus photo finish. The rain poured down back in ‘74 & Van Der Hum brought it home.

And then maybe there was Bart. JB Cummings. The Cup’s King. The man who has trained the Melbourne Cup victor a lazy 11 times. With horses such as Light Fingers, Galilee, Think Big (twice), Hyperno, Let’s Elope and Saintly winning for him in the past. In 2008 punters and bookies alike were hoping Viewed could do it for the Cup Kings & make that dull eleven a decent dozen over the covering and who would have though the soon to be 80 year old would actually do it. Well finished Bart, you are doubtlessly the king of the Turf. This is by far the biggest horse racing event in Australia.

We will additionally not forget the hot water Luca Cumani & second spot victor Bauer landed in after it was revealed the horse accepted shockwave therapeutics, not legal in a period of seven days of the Melbourne Cup. The stir was remarkable, especially after it was discovered an RVL selected vet conducted the treatment.

The Pro’s and Con’s of Ceiling Speakers

May 21st, 2009 by admin

Office buildings, airports and restaurants were the first homes of ceiling speakers. They can be easily recognized by the dense grilles that pour decibels right into your head.

But why would someone want ceiling or in wall speakers, instead of a pair of normal, efficient and highly affordable speaker cabinets. There could be a few reasons:

  • Saving some space in the room;
  • Maintaining the aesthetics of the room;
  • Hiding the wires;
  • Getting rid of the holes in the walls.

In the past, there weren’t many fans of wall or ceiling-mounted speakers. While there are still people that think plenum-mount technology is just a whim, on the other side it is this technology in particular that gains more and more advocates. This is probably due to a change in life styles. People want the environment adapted to their needs, not the other way around.

There’s one sure thing with in-wall and ceiling speakers: they are not for those who are into high-end audio. You could hardly find an audiophile willing to trade the deep bass that he or she loves so much for a bit of extra shelf space.

But even if not an audiophile, you’ll need to pay attention to the following parameters:

  • Frequency response - gives you the range of the audible spectrum that the speakers can reproduce; the human ear can hear 20 Hz to 20 MHz, thus the more a speaker approaches this interval, the better.
  • Power handling - specifies the ranges of power the speakers can safely receive from the amplifier (e.g. 20-100 watts);
  • Efficiency - also called sensitivity, this rating indicates how effectively the speaker uses the power sent to it by the amplifier.

A key aspect in having in-wall or in-ceiling speakers is how you capture the back wave. You can’t always know what happens behind that wall, how big the hole really is, or if it’s sealed. The answer is to use sealed speakers, no matter their location. Otherwise you’ll have a lot of rear acoustic energy wasted into the back-wall and a distorted, uneven sound.

Mounting the speakers

Usually it is a lot easier to mount ceiling speakers than in-wall speakers, at least where there is a fake ceiling. Mounting in-wall speakers is more of an architectural problem. That’s probably why these are also called “architectural speakers”. People don’t like to have small rooms, thin walls, and wires bursting from one room to another.

The easiest alternative is to project the audio system before even having the walls built up. The advantage is freedom to plan things (speakers among others) exactly how you want them. Figuring out the wires is the part you should do before building the walls. Some planning is needed ahead: talking to an electrician, finding out how much wire you need, seeing what kind of wire you can actually use (UL-rated wire is approved for use in walls in all 50 states). Also, seeing the layout of your lighting system, and how it would interfere with that of the speakers.

Inserting the speakers can be done on the run, as the wall is being raised. Some people successfully use the drywall as a speaker’s enclosure. The key is to have the speakers in the right place from the start. This would save you time, money and nerves.

Installing the speakers in an existing wall or ceiling is a bit more difficult and pricey. But it can be done. At first, find out what’s behind the walls you want the speakers mounted in and see if you can drill. You need to make some holes into the desired spots, and build the speaker-enclosures.

Ceiling speakers have a drawback: the location. we’re not used to having the sound come down at us from the ceiling, but from our side. The sensation of the sound-waves reaching the head and then the ears, is a bit strange. Some ceiling speakers are flexible within a given degree, so they can be pointed towards the listener. They are round-shaped in order to match the bulbs and lamps that also found their site on the ceiling.

Niles, SpeakerCraft, and others use directional tweeters and woofers that can be separately adjusted to compensate for imaging problems arising from the positioning drawbacks.

Most in wall speakers have paintable grilles, so you can perfectly black them out.

Above all, my biggest dilemma is what to do if my trendy, camouflage speaker, be it in-wall or in-ceiling, breaks down? Most users say I don’t need to worry as they can be taken out, repaired or even replaced. There’s also absolutely no need to worry if I want to add some speakers to my system, they say. One solution would be to think ahead and stuff the wall with more wire for later add-ons. Still, I find this unnecessary hassle. But for the sake of interior design logic, it may be worth it.
