When Even Beer Deserts Poker

January 11th, 2010 by admin

It is one of those undeniable basics of poker that poker players like to drink beer. A cold glass of beer just seems to go so well with a nice game of cards with the friends. You can think of it as an ultimate guy moment, cards, friends, and a pack of cold ones. The natural extension of this undeniable link would be for beer companies to sponsor poker players and poker tournaments. After all, if the beer is going to be there anyway, they could get a few more customers by advertising blatantly to their target audience.

The lack of beer advertisements in the poker world is particularly startling when you compare it to the situation in other sports. Even if you lived under a rock you would probably notice that beer companies like to spread their name in most of the big sports. After all, sports tend to attract their main demographic far more effectively than say, a wedding show. What is the difference between a poker game and a football game you may ask? The difference is the taboo that is still attached to poker. It seems like we may never truly get rid of the poker stigma if even beer is willing to desert us.

Yee Peng Fun Thai Lanterns

December 2nd, 2009 by admin

Asia is incessantly heavy with jubilations, South East Asia seems to have the selection of the bunch. Not amazingly Thailand is the base of Thai Lanterns and are nowadays gaining a far greater audience as they increase popularity at UK events.Yee Peng festival which follows the Buddhist Calendar and translates to month 12 is one of these festivals. The West Calendar commonly sees this coming in November. This Festival goes by the name of Loy Krathong throughout other regions of Thailand. The Thai people observe this religious festival and the traditions it demands. My favourite activity is the freeing of ‘Thai Lanterns’ or ‘Khom Loy’. It is truly unearthly to respect the sky alight with these burning globes. It is remembered that as the lanterns disappear into th sky so too do your worries.. The light is said to head people to a bright and fulfilled life. The Thai Lanterns are biodegradable and are fabricated from Rice Paper and Bamboo for structure. Flight time is about 12 minutes and the Lanterns are known to reach up of 1100 feet! There has been a rise in the popularity (excuse the pun) and has even found the Royal Thai Air Force vary their air activity and make cautionary to the airport to be cautious of potential perils should a lantern get stuck in a aeroplane turbine.

What’s in a Word

May 29th, 2009 by admin

online poker is full of colorful terminology and odd phrases, which newcomers to the game may find strange or simply incomprehensible. Some of these sayings also sound downright painful, even though the opposite is true.

Getting “hit in the face with the deck” is a good thing. This is the happy circumstance when a poker player has a lasting rush of luck, and wins hand after hand. Any poker player who has spent any time at the tables gets hit in the face once in a while, and certainly has witnessed it happening to another player.

Another way to describe good luck at the poker table is to say a player has a “horsehoe up the ass.” Again, this doesn’t sound too appealing, yet in poker it connotes a happy circumstance. Players will say things like, “hey, send that horsehoe you’re sitting on over here.”

In any event, when you’re at a table where someone is getting hit in the face with the deck, or has a horseshoe lodged where the sun doesn’t shine, then recognize that circumstance and play tight. Sometimes players just get lucky and the cards come their way, in which case, it’s best to just get out of their way when they are on a lucky rush. And when the unthinkable happens to you, exploit and enjoy it.

Distraction

April 3rd, 2009 by admin

There are many times when it is appropriate to adapt your style to the situation. If your poker style matches the situation, than you won’t have any problem fitting in at the casino table. If the style called for does not fit your personal playing style, you may have some trouble switching it up, but your change will improve your odds and make you that much more unpredictable.

If you are traditionally an aggressive player, it may pain you to play a tight game of poker, but there are times when it is appropriate. I came upon a time a few weeks ago. I was at a home game with a pretty large group of guys, and there were distractions everywhere. There was a giant screen TV with sports on in the background, people running to and from the kitchen to grab food and drinks, and about five conversations going on at once.

Normally, I like to read my opponents and find my chance to win with marginal-to-good hands, but with everything going on I just couldn’t make a read on most of the guys there. After trying to bluff a player who’d flopped an Ace-high straight, it became obvious that I wasn’t going to be making any reliable reads, so I sat tight. The generous blind amounts and a few good wins let me play against my style and wait for my cards to come.

An Airport Parking Story

September 10th, 2008 by admin

The man was driving his car. Driving to oblivion, that’s how he thought of it. The sky was the color of a television, not tuned to a dead channel, but maybe tuned to a channel in which lots of blue was the presenter and their guest was some sporadic white tufts of cloud. With a disappointing lack of pathetic fallacy in the sky, the man sighed as he pressed his foot down harder on the accelerator pedal. There was never enough time. Never enough time to sleep. Never enough time to eat. Never enough time to think what he needed to think as he sped towards the Heathrow airport parking joint where he was going to meet them. He half-heartedly wished that they could’ve had the meeting at…Say…The Glasgow airport parking place that he’d suggested as a joke, but he’d known they wouldn’t take him seriously. No one had even really taken him seriously and now wasn’t the time to be making jokes. It hadn’t always been like this. He’d been happy once, a while ago, he was sure of that, it was just so damn hard to remember. Most of his days were spend in a perpetual misery; it’s not that he himself was even a miserable person by nature, rather an unfortunate victim of circumstance. Just sometimes it was as if a mist descended down on him, well maybe not down on him per se, but around him, with him stuck in the middle. He hated being stuck in the middle of that damn cloud. That damned yellow cloud. He imagined it was yellow because the thought of a yellow cloud just seemed generally unpleasant. Enough, he thought, time to press on. With that, he imagined a stationary movie camera sat somewhere back behind him at a point already passed, watching him speeding off into the distance. He wished it was a sunset. He sighed again, disappearing from the camera’s view. To meet them.

Poker Hands and Bad Break-Ups

August 22nd, 2008 by admin

Getting a band hand in poker is like having a bad break-up. A relationship with your cards becomes so important. Do I take a risk? Do I not bet? Should I call or check? It becomes a choice just like a romantic relationship.

The chips fall on the table and here is where your decision lays. As in a relationship, you are now dealt a hand in which choices need to make. Moving forward in a relationship could work, maybe not.

Your hand falters because of a river card you weren’t expecting. Same as in a relationship, an unexpected card in poker can ruin what you had planned for the whole hand. A break-up could result in the relationship. In poker, you may lose that hand or have no choice but to fold.

The break-up of a hand can be devastating, like a break-up of a relationship. A relationship you form with your hand and what you think you should do can result in disaster. If played wrong or if your cards turn bad, can produce that break-up you just don’t want.

Bluffing in poker is just like bluffing in a relationship. In poker, you are bluffing other players, in a relationship you maybe bluffing yourself or the other person. Is it possible to be bluffing too well to fool yourself? As in a relationship, poker can be a win or lose situation and perhaps a break-up.
