Bow Hunting

June 16th, 2008 by admin

Archery is both the skill and the practice of using a bow to shoot arrows and hit a target. These days, it is a renowned sport of precision and accuracy but this skill dates back to early history as a tool for hunting and a weapon in conflict. Archery was seen in the histories of the different cultures all over the continents, all except Australia.

The initial evidence of archery is the “tya,” which is a bow that was probably used for hunting and was later turned into a weapon for combat. These bows ultimately took over the use of the “spear-thrower” as the main tool for launching projectiles. The spear thrower launches projectiles by using leverage to gain a greater velocity. It is made of a shaft with a hook where the end of the spear rests and is thrown by the movement of the upper arm and wrist.

The use of Archery in hunting is more commonly called Bow Hunting. In our modern society, hunting is no longer our main source of food and livelihood. This is because we can buy food and almost anything in shops and grocery stores. In this day and age, hunting is considered as a sport, calling the kill ‘game.’ And, as in all sports, hunting is regulated by a lot of rules and regulations. Some people also target fish and use modified bows. This is called bow fishing.

In North America, for example, regulations for bow hunting concern the hunting unit, which means the location of the hunt; the season, pertaining to the particular time; and what type (male or female) of animal species can be hunted down. Most of the time, Bow hunters are given a special season to hunt so that conflict with rifle hunters are kept at a minimum. Also, there are technical regulations in the hunt such as the minimum draw weight that is applied to the hunting of big game species. This is to maximize shot lethality and game recovery.

Bow hunters are different from rifle hunters because rifles can shoot from a range of more than 200 meters away. A good archer is careful and will restrict his shots to less than 60 meters, taking into consideration several factors such as the archer’s ability, the draw weight regulated and the target animal among others. Good bow hunters also choose to restrict their shooting range and prefer to shoot from a shorter distance. This is to make sure that the target is killed swiftly, humanely and with as little arrows as possible. Shooting from a closer distance allows the hunter a far more personal hunting experience because they get to test the target’s senses of sight, hearing and smell as well as their own. This limit in range is a huge challenge for the hunter and is one of the main reasons why archery hunting is a very striking sport.

As with weapons of war, there are a lot of types of bows that an archer can choose from. Traditional bows like the self bows, the longbows and recurve bows are able to accurately launch their arrows from a distance more than 20 yards but they shoot best when shot from a range of less than 20 meters. Nowadays, compound bows are usually preferred by bow hunters but seeing hunters with recurve bows are also common and legal in North America.

The favorite though is still the longbow because most hunters prefer to make the whole hunting experience as traditional as possible. However, more skill is needed to manipulate a longbow and achieve a clean hit than with other types of bows. Crossbows are generally used by the disabled hunters but its use by able hunters has been allowed in several states in 2005.

True to any weapon, proper training, skill and practice of the archer are needed to be able to bring out the best in a bow and hit a bull’s eye. Even more will be required to take down an animal target cleanly, humanely and with one shot if possible. An excellent archer can kill with one well-placed shot as efficiently as a hunter with a rifle.

The Triple Crown

June 10th, 2008 by admin

The Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, or simply the Triple Crown, is one of the most prestigious awards in the world of horseracing. A thoroughbred can only claim the Triple Crown if and only if it has won three prestigious horse races in the United States - the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes - in the same year. The Kentucky Derby, held at the Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, is the first leg of the Triple Crown. The Kentucky Derby is held every first Saturday of May. Two weeks after the Kentucky Derby the Preakness Stakes transpires, which serves as the second leg of the Triple Crown. The event is hosted at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. The final leg of the Triple Crown is the Belmont Stakes, which is held three weeks after the Preakness at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. In terms of distance, the racecourse at Belmont Park, measuring 1.5 miles, is the longest. This is followed by the track at Churchill Downs (1.25 miles) and then at the Pimlico Race Course (1.18 miles).Winning the Triple Crown is considered as one of thoroughbred racing’s greatest achievements that a horse can achieve. That aside, being named the Triple Crown victor is a rarity in itself. The last Triple Crown was given in 1978 to a stallion named Affirmed. Since then, no thoroughbred has ever garnered the Triple Crown honors.Big Brown, the victor of the 2008 Kentucky Derby and the 2008 Preakness Stakes, will win the Triple Crown if he will get the championship at the Belmont Stakes on June 2008. If successful, Big Brown will be the 12th thoroughbred to win the Triple Crown — a feat last achieved in 1978 — and end a 30-year Triple Crown drought, the longest in the award’s history.

How A Simple Golf Stretch Can Add 20 Yards To Your Drives

April 14th, 2008 by admin

To quickly improve your golf, stretch your golf muscles regularly!

What’s the difference between a “golf stretch” and an everyday stretch? The answer to this question may be your missling link to a great game and years of enjoyment instead of frustration and weak attempts at quitting the game.

I know…you’ve considered it! I’ve been there many times. But the bottom line…we keep coming back!

So to end the years of frustration and quickly transform your game, you need to do golf stretches daily. Yes, that’s right…daily!

It will only take you a few minutes to get them done, but the improvement in your game will be quick and dramatic. The return on this investment (of time) is well worth it.

Now which stretches to do to get the quickest return?

That’s a personal issue. Everyone has different limitations. Some are backswing related, others are follow through or even maintaining your golf posture.

Below I’m going to list a couple of golf stretches that will help you prevent back pain and increase your backswing range of motion for longer drives.

The first golf stretch is the Lying Leg Crossover:

  • Lie on back with legs extended.
  • Raise one leg and bend at knee to 90 degrees in knee and hip.
  • Cross that leg over extended leg, while opposite shoulder stays on ground.
  • Go until slight pull in butt and lower back.
  • Hold for 15 seconds and repeat once more.

•Switch legs and do opposite side.

This simple golf stretch will not only make your back feel better, but it will improve your ability to make a bigger turn, with less hip movement, creating torque and energy.

The second golf stretch is the Backswing Stretch:

  • Extend left arm out in front of you (if you are a right handed golfer).
  • Take right hand and put under left wrist.
  • Pull with right hand against left wrist and make as big a turn on back swing as possible.
  • Hold for at least 15 seconds, repeat once more and do the opposite for arm for your follow thru side.

This simple golf stretch will loosen up the muscles in the back of your shoulders and your upper back (lats), for more freedom on both your backswing and follow through.

Do these two stretches daily and watch your game improve quickly.

Note: These are only 2 golf stretches isolating certain areas of the body. To get the full benefit for your golf game, you need to do golf stretches for each muscle group.
